The Ryder Cup in Rome can now be considered archived from a media and participation point of view, 10 years after its birth. Now the first participation data are starting to arrive and some curiosities that I had missed along the way during the "competitive trance" of the challenge.

Franco Chimenti is undoubtedly one of the winners. It was September 20, 2013 and he wanted to bring the Ryder Cup to Italy (the year before Europe had won in the United States in Medinah). The facts have now spoken widely. The 2023 Ryder Cup set new records across the board, with Europe winning 16½-11½ over the United States.

The levels of engagement across social media and global broadcasts are unprecedented.

A total of 271,191 people from 100 different countries attended the 44th Ryder Cup in person at the Marco Simone Golf Country Club in Rome, with millions more following the action from afar on television and digital platforms.

There were 2,653 posts on the Ryder Cup's official social channels during the week of the challenge, resulting in over 600 million impressions and page views.

Views on the Ryder Cup's official social media channels are currently 197.6 million, with a total of 26.7 million interactions.

On the Ryder Cup Europe platforms alone, the impressions were 347,106,426, an increase of 117 percent compared to the 2018 Ryder Cup in Paris which had totaled 160 million.

Videos from the Team Europe Bus on Sunday evening were particularly successful with fans, with 14,054,985 views across all channels in the first 48 hours, total impressions of 19,188,189 and engagement of 1,482,709.

The early figures also show notable increases across all global broadcasts, with average viewers on Sky Sports in the UK up 38% over the 2021 Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits and 25% up on the 2018 edition at Le Golf National , making it the most watched Ryder Cup on Sky Sports UK.

The competition, named after the trophy donated by Englishman Samuel Ryder (1858–1936) to the American federation in 1924, is co-managed by the European Tour and the PGA of America. From 1927 to 1971 the tournament took place between the selection of the United States and that of Great Britain, with a clear American dominance (15-3) and only one draw.

Ireland was incorporated into Great Britain in 1973 and the rest of continental Europe in 1979. Following the acceptance of the European team as an antagonist of the US team, the tournament was much more balanced: from 1979 to 2018, in fact, there were eleven successes for Europe, eight for the United States and only one draw.
