Giorgia Meloni, Italy’s first woman Prime Minister, has announced her split from her 10 year old marriage with television journalist Andrea Giambruno. In a post on Instagram she has thanked her partner for time and announces her split for the better. The caption reads, “My relationship with Andrea Giambruno, which lasted almost ten years, ends here. I thank him for the wonderful years we spent together, for the difficulties we went through, and for giving me the most important thing in my life, which is our daughter Geneva.”

Here is a look at her journey so far.

Giorgia Meloni, a prominent Italian politician and journalist, was born on January 15, 1977. Her roots trace back to Sardinia through her father and Sicily through her mother. At the young age of 15 in 1992, Meloni became a part of the Youth Front, the youth branch of the neo-fascist Italian Social Movement (MSI). She balanced her political engagement with education, earning a diploma from the Amerigo Vespucci Institute in 1996.

During her youth, Meloni took on leadership roles. She became the national leader of Student Action, a student movement linked to the national-conservative National Alliance (AN), which succeeded the MSI. She represented this movement in the Student Associations Forum established by the Italian Ministry of Education. Additionally, she served as a councilor in the Province of Rome from 1998 to 2002. In 2000, she was elected as the national director of Youth Action, the AN youth wing, and made history in 2004 by becoming its first female president.

Meloni’s political career gained momentum in 2006 when she was elected to the Chamber of Deputies in Italy. She currently leads the Brothers of Italy (FDI) political party and has been the president of the European Conservatives and Reformists Party since 2020. Notably, she served as the Minister of Youth in the Berlusconi IV Cabinet from 2008 to 2011.

One of her significant political endeavors was co-founding the Brothers of Italy in 2012, alongside prominent leaders La Russa and Crosetto. This party became the focal point of her political journey. Meloni represented Lombardy in the Chamber of Deputies and also held the position of party leader in the house until she became the President of Fdl in 2014.

Giorgia Meloni, a right-wing populist and Italian nationalist, opposed abortion, euthanasia, homophobic relationships, marriages, and parenthood for same-sex couples, asserting that nuclear families are only headed by male-female pairs. Both xenophobia and Islamophobia have been leveled at her. She backs NATO but holds eurosceptic views of the EU and advocated for improved ties with Russia before to the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
